Visit costs
How Much Does a Vet Visit Cost? Real Published Prices and How to Get an Estimate

There is no single price for "a vet visit." The same checkup can have very different prices depending on the clinic, your area, and what gets added on.
This guide shows what a handful of real clinics publish for common items, explains why the numbers differ, and gives you a short script for getting a written estimate before you say yes.
Why is the price so different everywhere?
- Clinic type. Nonprofit and shelter clinics, full-service hospitals and tech-led urgent-care chains price very differently.
- What's bundled. One clinic's "annual exam" includes vaccines and a heartworm test. Another's is the exam alone.
- New vs. existing client. Some clinics charge more for a first visit.
- Costs keep rising. An October 2026 AAHA trade article says U.S. veterinary prices have risen about 6.5% per year on average since 2019. The same article cites a study finding only 1.91% of U.S. practices list prices on their websites. (AAHA is a veterinary trade group; we are reporting its figures, not verifying them.)
Published prices at five clinics (October 2026)
| Item | Humane Society of Huron Valley (Ann Arbor, MI) | Bellalago Veterinary Hospital (Kissimmee, FL) | BoosterPet, Puyallup/South Hill (WA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wellness exam | $65 ($80 new client) | $68.50 | $89 (members $0) |
| Sick or medical-issue exam | $75 ($90 new client) | $78.50 | Urgent care exam $139 (members $69.50) |
| Rabies, 1-year | $30 | $22.44 | Core vaccines $42.50 each |
| Dog distemper combo, 1-year | $30 | $28.87 | Core vaccines $42.50 each |
| Heartworm test | Not in its services table | $74.99 (with blood parasite screening) | $70.80 |
| Routine dental, small dog | $771–$1,183 (not incl. extractions) | Not posted on pricing page | From $950 (varies with extractions, etc.) |
A few more data points:
- Technician-only exams. Bellalago lists a technician exam at $30. BoosterPet says its Puyallup wellness exams are done by a licensed vet tech with doctors advising by video.
- All-in annual visit. The Humane Society of South Mississippi (Gulfport) lists a $95 annual exam for dogs that includes the exam, distemper combo, Bordetella, rabies, heartworm test and a fecal test. It also describes a sliding scale for wellness services.
- Telehealth. Huron Valley lists a $60 telehealth consult for current clients only.
- Reported by owners (unverified). In a February 2026 Reddit thread, one owner described a $180 vaccine-and-stool-sample visit. We have not verified that bill.
What can change your final bill
| Add-on | Ask this |
|---|---|
| Exam fee | "Is the exam fee separate from vaccines?" |
| Diagnostics (bloodwork, X-rays, tests) | "Which of these are needed today, and which could be scheduled later?" |
| Medications | "Can I get a written prescription to price-shop?" The AVMA says some clinics will match online pharmacy prices if you ask. |
| Sedation, anesthesia, monitoring | "Is that included in the quote?" |
| Recheck visits | "Are follow-ups free or billed?" |
| After-hours or urgent-care surcharges | "Is there a cheaper option that's open now?" |
How to get a written estimate (5 steps)
- Ask for it in writing, itemized. An AVMA veterinary-practice article says estimates give owners transparency about costs and help them understand the plan. It also notes that individual estimates vary.
- Ask for options. Many situations have more than one approach. Ask your vet to lay out the choices and what each costs. The vet decides what is medically appropriate; you decide what fits your budget.
- Ask what's included. Exam, medications, rechecks, anesthesia and monitoring should be named.
- Ask for the range. "What's the likely range if it goes well, and what could push it higher?"
- Ask about payment before you agree. The AVMA says many clinics offer payment plans, deferred payments or financing. See our guide to vet payment plans and financing.
Ways to lower routine costs
- Use shelter and nonprofit clinics for routine care. Compare their published vaccine prices and spay/neuter programs by state.
- Check membership or wellness plans. BoosterPet's $0 member wellness exam shows how a plan can change the price. Run the math on the membership fee first.
- Shop for medications. The AVMA suggests asking your vet first, then comparing licensed pharmacies. Use a valid state-licensed pharmacy and a prescription.
- Compare insurance to saving. See Is Pet Insurance Worth It? for the math.
Before you go: a quick checklist
- Write down your pet's vaccine history, medications and past records.
- Call and ask the price of the specific visit you need.
- Ask whether you are being quoted as a new or existing client.
- Ask about deposits, cancellation rules and accepted payment types.
- Ask for the estimate in writing before treatment, unless it's an emergency.
FAQ
Is the cheapest clinic always the best deal? Not necessarily. A low exam fee can be paired with extra charges, and a higher bundled price can include more. Compare the same list of items.
Do I have to accept the whole estimate? You can ask questions and ask for options. Your vet can explain what is time-sensitive and what isn't. We can't give medical advice.
Why can't you list a "typical" price? The clinics we found publish different bundles, and few clinics publish prices at all, so any average would be misleading. We show real examples instead.
Where do you get these prices? Directly from each clinic's page, with the date we checked. Spot an error? Send a correction.
