This is a starter list: one or two nonprofit or shelter clinics per state, with the prices they publish.

It's not a complete directory, and a clinic near you may be cheaper. Every figure was copied from the clinic's own page on October 25, 2026. Prices change, so confirm before booking.

What clinics charge, state by state

"Spay / neuter" means female / male. Dog prices are by weight where the clinic lists them.

More detail on a few programs

  • Arizona. "Qualifying" for the $35 dog price means meeting one of several tests, such as living in listed ZIP codes, AHCCCS or EBT enrollment, tribal enrollment, school-lunch eligibility or income documents. Check the clinic's page for the full list. Bloodwork for pets over 7 is $150.
  • New York (Westchester). The Community Care schedule for people receiving government assistance lists an exam at $22.50, cat spay $150 and neuter $125, dog spay $175–$250 and dog neuter $150–$225. Cody's Clinic requires a $50 deposit and animals 6 months or older. One printed dog-neuter figure (75–100 lb, $450) looks like a typo, since it equals the standard-price figure for that weight band, so call to confirm.
  • Virginia. Chesapeake's top income tier (over $100,000) is $110 neuter and $130 spay for cats. The lowest tier (income $30,000 or less) is $77 and $91. Dogs run $280–$430 in the top tier and $205–$310 in the lowest. Bloodwork is $90–$110 and required for older pets, and unaltered pets over 6 months carry a $10 surcharge.
  • Georgia and North Carolina. Both list bloodwork for older pets ($130–$150 in Georgia, $75–$95 in Charlotte). Georgia charges a $50 late-pickup fee after 4 PM.

A few honest caveats

  • Sacramento SPCA. The pricing page shows a header dated March 1, 2026, but its spay/neuter table says it's effective June 1, 2017. We can't tell which is current. Call before relying on it. It lists a $10 per dog or $5 per cat deposit.
  • Huron Valley. The spay/neuter page and the general fee page differ by $6 on dog spay and neuter (for example, $296 vs. $290). We list the spay/neuter page figures.
  • Not every clinic is shown. We tried other programs whose pages were unavailable or out of date when we checked, so they're not included. We'd rather leave a state out than guess.

Why two clinics can differ by hundreds of dollars

  • What's bundled. Some prices include an exam, pain medication, an e-collar or a vaccine, while others bill them separately.
  • Weight tiers. Large dogs often cost more.
  • Income-based pricing. Check which proof the clinic accepts.
  • Add-ons. Some clinics add fees for complications. Colorado, for example, lists $25 (cats) and $85–$240 (dogs) for undescended testicles.
  • Required pre-op items. Rabies vaccination and bloodwork may be required.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What exactly does the price include (exam, anesthesia, pain medication, e-collar, recheck)?
  • Is a deposit required, and is it refundable if I reschedule?
  • Do you have income, age, military or assistance discounts, and what proof do you accept?
  • Are there weight, breed or age limits?
  • What add-ons could apply?
  • What are the drop-off and pick-up times?
  • How long is the waitlist?

Your booking checklist

  • Bring vaccine records, ID and any proof of assistance.
  • Confirm carrier or leash rules.
  • Ask whether your pet should skip food that morning. Follow the clinic's instructions, not ours.
  • Plan time off for pick-up.
